Educate society on mental illness

RE: I'm sorry, I miss my son very much
        August 10, 2006

Your article is a tragic reminder of the devastating consequences of mental illness on individuals, families and communities.

The article illustrates that myths and misconceptions about mental illness are plentiful and dangerous.

Stigma, discrimination and the failure to adequately accommodate disabilities contribute strongly to the disempowerment and marginalization of individuals with mental illness. Some individuals with mental illness will remain silent instead of seeking needed or wanted treatment due to fear of rejection and alienation from the community. These concerns cause people to hide their illness and daily struggles, detrimentally affecting their health, well-being and recovery.

If we are to become an inclusive, understanding and accepting society that supports individuals in their quest for wellness and recovery from mental illness, we must begin by educating the community, dispelling the myths and stereotypes associated with mental illness and eliminating the discrimination encountered by so many. We must all become advocates for change and inclusion if we are to become a caring and supportive community.
